Historical background
The
meaning of the word
" Yemen" is
different in many history books. For the ancient geographers it is
" Happy Arabia".
It was also said that Yemen was named after Ayman bin Yaarub bin Qahtan. .
In
the Arab tradition and for Yemenis, Yemen is derived from
"Al-Yumn"
(Grace
and Blessing).
This is the
euphemistic expression for
"Arabia Felix" whereas others have said that it was called so because of Yemen's location on
the right hand side of the Holly Qaaba .
Historians found out that civilization developed in Yemen at the beginning of
the flourishing civilization in the 10th century B.C. Sheba civilization
flourished on the bank of Wadi Dhana, Maeen on wadi al- jawf, Qutban on Wadi
Baihan, Hadramaut on wadi urma and awsan on wadi markha. Sheba is considered
the most ancient Yemeni dynasty.
Yemen's unique architectural arts and warm beaches attract visitors who like it
very much.
Yemen is famous for its tourist islands spreading along Yemeni regional waters
in the Red Sea, and Arabian Sea.
Visitors are attracted by agricultural terraces and other beautiful historical
remains of Yemen.
Geographical
background
-
Yemen is
situated in the south west of the Arabian Peninsula. The highlands are an
extention of a series of high mountains across the Arabian desert, which is
known as the "Empty Quarter " from the east.
On its left side stretch the coastal plains overlooking the Red Sea and Arabian
Sea. The eastern plains stretch on the right side.
Unlike the other parts of the peninsula, it rains in spring due to the height
of the mountains. But rains are not heavy, as the torrents flow across several
valleys.
